CM: Milan’s late show trend continues vs. Fiorentina

AC Milan’s trend of scoring late goals to earn points continued last night as Nikola Milenkovic’s late own-goal earned all three against Fiorentina.

Calciomercato.com writes how the last 15 minutes could now be called the ‘Zona Milan’ (Milan’s zone) as the knack for late goals persisted thanks to Milenkovic’s early Christmas gift that keeps the Rossoneri in the running for the Scudetto behind Napoli.

Since the beginning of the year Milan have scored seven goals in the final 15 minutes of games, while in the last eight games it has happened five times. In 15 league games, Milan have scored four match-winning goals and have only let in two at the other hand.

It happened against Fiorentina yesterday, but also against Spezia in the 13th round with Giroud’s magic scissor kick. Against Verona Sandro Tonali’s winner was in the 81st minute, while away at Empoli – in addition to Rebic’s goal that opened the scoring in the 79th minute – there were two goals in added time from Ballo-Touré in the 93rd and Leao in the 96th.

Milan have not stopped a trend that has continued uninterrupted since the beginning of 2022 and was also a key factor in winning the Scudetto last season. Ever since Giroud turned the derby around in the 78th minute it seems to have been a theme, after the goals against Salernitana (2-2 draw), Lazio (Tonali’s winner) and Fiorentina (Leao’s winner).

Of course it would be nice to have the games done and dusted before the final quarter of an hour, but the certainty is that to beat Milan commitment and concentration is needed for 90 minutes plus.
