Haaland opened the scoring in the 25th minute when Dortmund captain Marco Reus put him clean through on goal.

The Norway international made no mistake and it was more of the same five minutes later as he doubled Dortmund’s lead from the penalty spot.

And Haaland completed his hat-trick in the 51st minute, eventually getting the better of Florian Stritzel after the goalkeeper denied his first effort.

The Bundesliga side deployed a strong team for the match, with England star Jude Bellingham featuring in midfield.

Fellow German giants RB Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen and Stuttgart also progressed, although Werder Bremen suffered a shock defeat.

TRANSFER LATEST

Haaland has been linked with a move away from Dortmund this summer, with European champions Chelsea reportedly interested.

He dismissed speculation in July, telling the press: “I hope they are just rumours, as €175million [£150m] would be a lot of money for one person.”

But the Blues now look set to re-sign Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku for £97.5million – seven years after selling him to Everton for £28m.

Haaland reportedly has a £65m release clause in his contract that can be activated next summer, putting Europe’s top clubs on red alert.

The Leeds-born star has been prolific since joining Dortmund from Red Bull Salzburg in January 2020, scoring 60 goals in as many games.

Haaland has also become one of the most popular footballers in Europe, with a young fan invading the pitch for his autograph during a friendly.
