The important games to watch on Matchday 28

Last weekend’s 1-0 win away at RB Leipzig moved Bayern seven points clear at the top of the table and a big step closer to defending their Bundesliga title. Matchday 28 sees Union Berlin come to the Allianz Arena. Closest rivals Leipzig are at Werder Bremen, while fourth hosts third when Eintracht Frankfurt face Wolfsburg. Find out all you need to know about this matchday from the Bayern view here.

Werder Bremen – RB Leipzig

Marcel Sabitzer and Dani Olmo gave Leipzig a 2-0 win at home in the reverse fixture against Bremen.

Kick-off: Saturday, 10 April, 15:30 CEST

Importance: The 1-0 defeat at home to Bayern last weekend was a major blow to Leipzig’s title ambitions. They are now seven points off the top with seven games to go, meaning their job now is to secure the runners-up spot ahead of Wolfsburg and Frankfurt. Leipzig and Werder meet again on 30 April in the DFB Cup semi-final.

Fact: Leipzig head to Bremen on a run of four straight away wins without conceding. It’s the first time they’ve ever managed such a streak in the Bundesliga. RB also tend to get the better of Werder, who have lost six of the nine previous encounters (W2, D1). That is Bremen’s worst record against any current top-flight opponent.

Eintracht Frankfurt – VfL Wolfsburg

A brace from top scorer Wout Weghorst secured Wolfsburg a 2-1 win over Frankfurt in the reverse fixture.

Kick-off: Saturday, 10 April, 15:30 CEST

Importance: Champions League hopefuls Eintracht and Wolfsburg meet in Frankfurt on Saturday. The hosts are currently fourth on 50 points – seven clear of Dortmund in fifth. The Wolves are Bayern’s opponents the following week and sit third right now on 54 points. Both teams have only suffered three losses all campaign (all away from home), which is the fewest either have ever had after 27 matchdays.

Fact: Frankfurt are still yet to lose at home this season (W7, D6), which is a claim only Bayern and Wolfsburg can also make. Their 50 points is a new club record after 27 matchdays. As for the Wolves, they’ve won nine of their last 11 league fixtures and boast the most clean sheets in the division this season (13). Wolfsburg have also won their last four visits to Frankfurt.

Strasbourg – Paris Saint-Germain

Goals from Pembele, Mbappe, Gueye and Kean gave PSG a comfortable 4-0 win at home to Strasbourg shortly before Christmas.

Kick-off: Saturday, 10 April, 17:00 CEST

Importance: Paris Saint-Germain face a trip to Strasbourg in Ligue 1 ahead of the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Bayern. A 1-0 defeat at home to Lille last weekend meant PSG lost top spot in the league to their opponents, including former FCB midfielder Renato Sanches. The Parisians will be out to make amends away at 13th-placed Strasbourg if Neymar (suspended at the weekend), Kylian Mbappe and Angel di Maria are to earn the club a 10th league title.

Fact: History is very much on PSG’s side with 21 wins from the 32 encounters to date, including a comfortable 4-0 victory shortly before Christmas. The French champions are on 63 points – three off leaders Lille – and can’t afford any more sip-ups in the final seven games with Monaco (62) and Lyon (61) breathing down their neck.
