‘Nice guy’ Ibrahima Konate backed to succeed at Liverpool by old RB Leipzig pal

Ibrahima Konate has been backed to be a huge success at Liverpool by one of his former RB Leipzig team-mates.

Liverpool triggered Konate’s £36million release clause to make the France Under-21 defender their first summer signing and Yvon Mvogo says he is quality.

Mvogo spent three years with Konate at Leipzig when the French joined them from Sochaux and says he has everything needed to succeed in the Premier League with Liverpool.

“Ibra Konate is just such a fantastic defender,” said the Switzerland goalkeeper. “He had some injuries this year so he couldn’t show his full potential.

“He’s one of the best young defenders I have seen in my career and I just wish him all the best at Liverpool.

Swiss keeper Yvon Mvogo says Ibrahima Konate will be a big success at Liverpool

“I’m sure he will succeed there and show everyone what a great player he is.

“I know he has all the attributes needed to do well in the Premier League. He has all the strengths a defender needs.”

Mvogo claims Konate will settle in straight away at Anfield because he has a great personality.

“Ibra is a fantastic human being, really lovely, someone who is really kind and always there for you,” he said.

“It doesn’t matter if you play for the club or work for the club, he’s the same with everyone. He’s just such a lovely person and I wish him the best.”

Mvogo is on standby to play the biggest game of his life for the Swiss against Italy on Wednesday in Rome because No 1 goalkeeper Yann Sommer’s wife is expecting their second child any day now.

The Swiss have made arrangements to fly the Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper back to Germany to be with his wife Alina the instant he gets the call to go.

Mvogo has only played four times for the Swiss and says his time as No 2 at RB Leipzig before his two-year loan move to PSV Eindhoven last summer has prepared him.

“The thing is I know this situation very well because when I was at Leipzig, I was the second-choice goalkeeper there,” he said.

“As the second-choice goalkeeper, you never know what can happen, so you always have to be be prepared.

“For me it’s nothing new. If something happens, I’m ready to play. It’s not going to change my preparation for games and I have the same rituals.

“It’s not a problem. I’ve played one game in the Nations League and three friendlies. Of course, Italy is such a big game, everyone wants to be on the pitch and represent their country.

“If I have the chance to play, I will be ready for sure.”
