Marco Rose: “We know what to expect”

Borussia Dortmund will switch their attentions back to the Bundesliga when they travel to Arminia Bielefeld on Saturday afternoon (kick-off 15:30 CET). BVB coach Marco Rose is expecting ” a heated atmosphere”.

“The Alm is a stadium where it’s always heated. Bielefeld are an unpleasant opponent that battles and runs very hard,” said Rose of the upcoming away trip for his BVB side. Having opened their campaign with six wins and two defeats, the Black & Yellows sit in second place with 18 points. Opponents Bielefeld are down in 17th with five points from five draws. Arminia are one of only two clubs yet to register a victory this season, but they have also lost only three times (only seven clubs have suffered fewer defeats). “They’re stable at the back, defend aggressively and are a constant threat from crosses and set-pieces,” said Rose as he reflected upon the opposition’s strengths. “We know what to expect.”

As well as their next game, BVB’s last match was also among the talking points at the press conference. The team suffered a 4-0 defeat in Amsterdam in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday. “We sat down together yesterday and identified the elements of our play that we need to work on. Nobody wanted or needed that evening. Now we need to show a good reaction and do things better again,” Rose declared.

The game took its toll in personnel terms too. Thomas Meunier (knock to the foot) and Nico Schulz (torn muscle fibres) are out. Erling Haaland will also miss several weeks due to an injury to his hip flexor.

“It’s a chance for the lads further down the pecking order to show and draw attention to themselves. Our first XI will still look good tomorrow and we see the opportunity to win a Bundesliga match in Bielefeld,” said Rose.”I see no reason why we should not go there in confident mood, because we have good footballers, because we have lads who have demonstrated that they can deal with setbacks. But we need to show a reaction.”
