Man Utd’s sudden change of transfer approach shows Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has learnt lesson

Manchester United are not hanging around this summer as they look to bring in reinforcements as quickly as they can.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men are on the verge of signing Jadon Sancho as both clubs look close to agreeing a fee for the England international.

But the Red Devils aren’t willing to stop there, they want to build on that momentum and keep the ball rolling as reports suggest they want to thrash out a deal for Rennes rising star Eduardo Camavinga.

According to French publication RMC, United are ready to meet with Camavinga’s entourage as early as next week.

The 18-year-old has been linked with a number of top clubs in recent months after bursting onto the scene in Ligue 1 and representing France in the Nations League.

Camavinga’s current deal runs out in June 2022 and Rennes are believed to be open to parting ways with the forward this summer to ensure he doesn’t walk away for free this time next year.

It’s not just the calibre of player that Man Utd are targeting that should excite fans, but their urgency to get signings over the line as early as possible so other teams don’t swoop in at the last minute to hijack their deals.

It’s a drastically different approach to 12 months ago where they missed out on Sancho after a summer-long saga.

United had pinned their hopes on signing the 20-year-old but the talks dragged on for the duration of the window and in the end, they missed out on their top target when he was there for the taking.

It was bitterly disappointing given how much time and effort they had put in to orchestrate a deal as Dortmund became frustrated at United’s unwillingness to meet their asking price.

The Bundesliga club eventually set a deadline for United to come up with the required funds, which they would fail to meet, as BVB took the decision to keep a hold of Sancho for another season.

But it’s clear to see the Old Trafford club have learned from those mistakes.

Dortmund would again set the same stipulations to ensure there wasn’t a repeat of last summer.

But lightning would not strike twice for United who look set to secure their man before the Euros even finish, giving him plenty of time to settle in before the new season.

In truth, it might have worked out better for United as they are sealing his signature for a significantly reduced fee of £70m instead of the £100m territory that was talked about last summer.

At the same time, a fit and firing Sancho would have been a real asset to a Man Utd side that came up one place short in the Premier League and Europa League.

They should get to find out this year, however, as they look to challenge on all fronts.

And who knows, the club’s similar urgent approach in their pursuit of Camavinga means another player could be arriving at Old Trafford shortly after him.
