Manchester United believe Ralf Rangnick’s imminent arrival at Old Trafford will give them an edge in the race to sign Erling Haaland next summer.
The 63-year-old signed the 21-year-old striker for RB Salzburg in January 2019 when he was employed as a sporting director for the two European clubs in Red Bull’s football stable.
Borussia Dortmund are likely to cash in on Haaland when a £63million escape clause in the player’s contract kicks in next summer.
And although United will face fierce competition from clubs like Manchester City, Real Madrid and Paris St Germain, the presence of Rangnick in negotiations could prove decisive.
Rangnick will arrive in Manchester to become United’s interim manager this week once he has sorted out work permit issues.

He will earn £10million to guide the Reds to the end of the season, when a permanent boss will be appointed – and he can boost his wages by up to £2million by guiding United into the top four and qualification for the Champions League.
Rangnick will then move into an executive role on a two-year deal worth further £15million.
And that is when United will look to exploit his relationship with Haaland and his father, the former Leeds and Manchester City midfielder Alfie.
The Reds’ attack is currently being led by Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani – who have a combined age of 70.
Rangnick convinced Haaland to join Salzburg in a £7.2million deal when he left Molde.
He admitted at the time that he felt the striker would be better suited to moving to Austria because he would be unable to get regular first-team Bundesliga football at RB Leipzig.
Haaland was sold to Dortmund a year later for £18million and is now one of the hottest properties in the game.
