United pulled off arguably the coup of the transfer window when Ronaldo returned to Old Trafford from Juventus this summer.

Since then the 36-year-old has scored in every game he has played, and will be looking to add to his four goals in three appearances so far when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side face Aston Villa on Saturday.

Prior to Ronaldo’s signing, United had been expected to join the race for Haaland when the Borussia Dortmund star’s £68million release clause comes into play at the end of the season.

After filling priority positions ahead of this campaign with the captures of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane, the Red Devils planned to target a holding midfielder and a striker next summer.

And that blueprint hasn’t changed, according to ESPN – with Haaland and Declan Rice their top targets.

The publication points out that the money for Ronaldo’s £20m move came from outside the allotted transfer budget – opening up the possibility of a fearsome front line including the five-time Ballon d’Or winner and Haaland next season.

United were favourites to sign Haaland from RB Salzburg in January last year, with the striker having played under Solskjaer for Molde in their native Norway.

But Dortmund snapped him up for £18m after the Red Devils pulled out of a deal – and the 21-year-old has gone on to score an incredible 68 goals in 67 games for the Bundesliga side, including 11 in eight appearances this season.

Rice, meanwhile, has continued to impress for West Ham this term after he was one of the standout stars of England’s Euro 2020 campaign.

United are keen on the 22-year-old midfielder, but club scouts have been told to identify other options with the Hammers expected to demand in the region of £80m to £90m.

Club bosses are said to believe an alternative can be found from outside the Premier League, with English players attracting inflated fees in the domestic market.

Eduardo Camavinga was seen by many as an ideal candidate after his impressive performances for Rennes, but Real Madrid swooped to land the 18-year-old for £28m on the final day of the transfer window.

Earlier this summer it was reported that Rice had turned down two contract offers from West Ham and could look to move next summer.

He was also been linked with Chelsea and Manchester City as the Premier League heavyweights seek long-term successors to N’Golo Kante and Fernandinho respectively.
