United would be his dream destination despite his links with the blue half of Manchester, according to Calciomercato, cited by the Daily Star.

Solskjaer’s side are close to completing the signing of Varane from Real Madrid, and there is no indication they are also interested in Boateng.

However, the 32-year-old can play at right-back as well as centre-back – so he could be an option worth considering if the Premier League giants fail to land Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid.

Trippier and Rennes midfielder Camavinga are the next targets in Solskjaer’s sights once the signing of Varane has been confirmed.

United are also believed to be interested in Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka – but according to ESPN they will look to sell players before bringing in any more new recruits.

The publication states that Jesse Lingard, Brandon Williams, Anthony Martial, Diogo Dalot, Phil Jones, Alex Telles, Andreas Pereira, Daniel James and Axel Tuanzebe have all been made available for the right price this summer.

If Pogba were to leave as well, the Red Devils could raise around £100m from player sales – which would be enough to fund late swoops for both Trippier and Camavinga.
