Man Utd eye David de Gea replacement, Arsenal enter £90m Declan Rice talks with West Ham – Paper Round

Man Utd eye Kobel but want De Gea to stay

Manchester United are interested in signing Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel despite also wanting David de Gea to stay amid contract negotiations with their current No. 1. The Independent claims head coach Erik ten Hag wants different tactical options and to create competition for the gloves at Old Trafford, with Kobel said to fit the desired profile given his ability to play with his feet, an area De Gea has struggled with this season.

The Independent adds: “The Switzerland international’s current contract runs until 2026 but has established himself as one of the leading goalkeepers in the Bundesliga this season, and among the most promising in the game.

Arsenal’s £90m Rice talks

Arsenal will look to offer Declan Rice £300,000-a-week in their bid to win the race to sign the West Ham midfielder, with the Daily Mail reporting the Gunners have opened talks over a £90m summer move. The Gunners are eager to capitalise on their return to the Champions League and maintain their status at title contenders, and that could mean a surprise outgoing in midfield as they look to land Rice.

“In addition to making major funds available to Mikel Arteta to strengthen his squad, Mail Sport understands the club will loosen constraints on their wage bill to ensure the team can attract sufficient talent to maintain their current status as genuine Premier League title contenders,” the Mail adds.

“Arsenal will look to offset their anticipated spend by selling a number of players – with Granit Xhaka among the players in line to depart.”

Is the Rice right for Man City?

Meanwhile, Manchester City are pondering whether Rice’s playing style is suitable for their squad as they ponder a move for the West Ham midfielder, the Daily Mail reports. Rice is expected to leave this summer and the Hammers could seek more than £100m for the England international. With a bidding war possible given Manchester United and Chelsea are also said to be interested as well as Arsenal, soon-to-be Premier League champions (once more) City will consider how Rice could impact the influential Rodri.

“His style could cut across that of Rodri, who operates at the base of midfield and provides the freedom for attacking players like Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan to push further forward,” the Mail writes.

“Arsenal have been considered favourites for Rice’s signature as Mikel Arteta looks to add top quality additions to their squad this summer after their season has been derailed in recent weeks. However, the Gunners have concerns over price of any potential deal.”

Newcastle want Gallagher

Newcastle are interested in signing Conor Gallagher from Chelsea, the Daily Mail reports. The 23-year-old could be part of a big clear-out at Chelsea this summer, although it remains unclear which players Mauricio Pochettino would be keen on keeping once he arrives at Stamford Bridge – as is expected to be announced this week. Up at Newcastle, who are on course for the Champions League, as well as wanting Gallagher as Eddie Howe looks to bolster his midfield options, the Toon also face competition for another England player.

“Newcastle are also keen on James Maddison but will face stiff competition from Tottenham and have greater financial restrictions than their rivals at the top of the table,” the Mail adds.

“England attacking midfielder Maddison, 26, will in big demand regardless of whether Leicester suffer relegation from the Premier League in the coming weeks.”
