Liverpool line up German maestro Florian Neuhaus as Gini Wijnaldum transfer replacement

Liverpool are targeting rising German star Florian Neuhaus as a possible replacement for Gini Wijnaldum.

The 24-year-old is currently with the Germany squad at the European Championship, and no transfer talks will be allowed until after the tournament is completed next month.

But the Reds have a strong interest and, according to reports in Germany, initial contact has been made with his club, Borussia Monchengladbach.

Neuhaus is a versatile midfielder who, like Wijnaldum, has excellent ball retention. He also excels in a more attacking role, scoring eight goals and providing the same number of assists for Gladbach in the 2020/21 season.

He is expected to press for a place in the Germany starting line up at the Euros, and has also been on the radar of Bayern Munich.

That could prove difficult for Liverpool, but the player has insisted he has no agreement with the Bundesliga champions, and has hinted he would be interested in a move abroad.

Neuhaus – who has three years remaining on his contract – recently told German outlet Sport 1: “I am not committed.

“I am a person who likes to dare something. I could very well imagine going abroad. I don’t necessarily have to go to Bayern Munich.

“But I don’t necessarily have to leave either, because I’m currently feeling very much at home at Borussia Mönchengladbach.”

The Reds are likely to strengthen in midfield, after addressing their defensive issues with the signing of Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig.
