Lewandowski is VdV Player of the Season 2020/21


This honour is more than deserved! After setting a new record in the Bundesliga with 41 goals this season, Robert Lewandowski has been awarded the “Silver Shoe” as the best player of the season by his professional colleagues. In the traditional vote by the players’ union VdV, the The Best FIFA Men’s Player from FC Bayern received 75.9 percent of the votes cast, clearly beating Dortmund’s Erling Haaland (7.1%) and teammate Thomas Müller (3.5%). After 2013, 2017, 2018 and 2020, the 32-year-old has now received the award five times.

The Pole also led the way in the vote for the VdV Team of the Season, which is dominated by the record champions. Lewandowski was voted best in his position by an overwhelming 96.5%. Lining up next to him are Manuel Neuer (51.8%), Alphonso Davies (30.5%), David Alaba (46.1%), Joshua Kimmich ( 81.6%), Thomas Müller (41.1%) and Leon Goretzka (45.4%). The eleven is completed by Dayot Upamecano (RB Leipzig, 57.4%), Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund, 36.9%), Filip Kostić (Eintracht Frankfurt, 28.4%) and Haaland (Borussia Dortmund, 61.7%).

In addition, the Munich team secured two second places in the vote. In the battle for the “Silver Coaching Bench” as the best coach of the season, Hansi Flick was narrowly defeated by Frankfurt coach Adi Hütter (34.0%) with 29.1% of the vote. The “Silver Arrow” award for best newcomer went to Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham (24.1%), just ahead of Jamal Musiala (19.9%).
