“It’ll be a tough battle” – Sancho returns to team training

On Wednesday evening (20:30 CET), Borussia Dortmund will play their third home game in the space of eight days. Having hosted Manchester City and Werder Bremen, they are up against Union Berlin on Bundesliga Matchday 30.

There is a chance that forward Jadon Sancho could be part of the squad to face the capital club, having made his return to team training on Monday. “Things are looking very good,” said coach Edin Terzic. A decision as to whether he is included in the matchday squad will be made after the final training sessions on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning. “Jadon is brimming with excitement; he really wants to play again. As for how much game time he gets in our upcoming matches, we will see,” Terzic explained. “But we don’t want to take any risks because we’re obviously still going to need his help often this season.” Thomas Delaney will not be available to face Union. Terzic is expecting him to return to team training on Thursday.

BVB have won their last two Bundesliga games in a row (3-2 in Stuttgart, 4-1 against Bremen) and, following the defeats suffered by Wolfsburg and Frankfurt, they are now four points off fourth place. The Black & Yellows have picked up seven points from their last four games, even though they have fallen behind on each occasion. “That’s a sign of a good mentality. However, we obviously don’t want that to happen,” said Terzic. Union is the team that has conceded the fewest goals in the opening 15 minutes of their matches, while also scoring the most during the same period. “We’ll need to be on our guard from the off. But we’re always strong enough to come back.”

The visitors have lost only six matches this season, beat Stuttgart last time out and currently occupy eighth place in the table. “They’re having a fantastic season,” said Terzic, adding: “In Urs Fischer, they have a coach who gets the maximum out of his team. They’re very difficult to beat. Not only we, but also other Bundesliga clubs, have experienced that. It’s going to be a tough battle.”

BVB were beaten 2-1 in the reverse fixture by two set-pieces. “Union Berlin should not be reduced solely to their set-pieces. Their advancing full-backs create a lot of danger. Restricting their activity will be key for tomorrow’s game,” explained Edin Terzic.
