Varane deal ‘a sign of Man Utd’s aims’
Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann is “confident” that Leon Goretzka will extend his deal amid interest from Manchester United.
The German has entered the final 12 months of his contract meaning the Bavarians run the risk of losing him for nothing.
United are looking to add a central midfielder and have been linked with the likes of Edouardo Camavinga and Saul Niguez.
Goretzka is another player touted with a move to Old Trafford.
Paul Pogba’s uncertain future may also further Ole Gunnar Solskjaers need to bolster his options in the middle of the park.
The 26-year-old has become an integral part of the Bayern midfield and Nagelsmann, who has only just taken charge, is confident he’ll stay put at the Allianz Arena.
He said: “I’m not involved enough that I have a say every day. I stay out of these issues.
“Of course I have talked to him about my plans for him. I’ve told him I’d be happy if he extended and I’m also confident. There are several topics involved when it comes to discussing a contract extension.
“I’ll continue to focus on the sports side of things and show him he can be one of the most dangerous midfielders in Europe. He has potential to get even better.”
Bayern have already lost David Alaba so will want to retain the rest of their core players.

Dayot Upamecano, who was attracting Premier League interest, has moved to the Allianz from RB Leipzig.
Nagelsmann added: “Our task as a club is to always observe the market. We have a good squad, but we can always improve it. Every coach in the world wants the best possible team.”
United meanwhile have already raided the Bundesliga for a major name having added Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.
Solskjaer was keen to sign the English winger last summer but an agreement could not be reached with the German side.

12 months on though and Sancho has returned to Manchester for just over £70m.
United are also set to add Raphael Varane in the coming days after Real Madrid agreed to sell the centre-half.
His contract in Spain was winding down and he had no desire to pen an extension.
A partner for skipper Harry Maguire was high up on United’s wish list so adding someone of the World Cup winner’s calibre is a major coup.
