Aston Villa vs. Manchester City – Football Match Report – March 19, 2023

Rachel Daly’s extra-time goal helped Aston Villa claim a spot in the Women’s FA Cup semifinals as they beat Manchester City 2-1 on Sunday.

Playing at a high tempo from the get-go, Villa dictated the opening exchanges and saw the best chances of the game, forcing two smart saves from Ellie Roebuck in the City goal before Laia Aleixandri diverted Rachel Corsie’s header beyond her own goalkeeper halfway through the first half.

Following a strong save to deny Lauren Hemp from inside the box, Hannah Hampton found herself rooted in place when Deyna Castellanos claimed the leveller five minutes before the break with a looped header.

Despite looking visibly tired, the hosts rallied at the start of extra-time and broke the parity as a scrambled free-kick caused chaos, and Daly emerged as the hero to fire the ball home from two yards out.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Manchester United bested Lewes 3-1 thanks to goals from Vilde Boe Risa and Nikita Parris after having taken an early lead through a Rhian Cleverly own goal.

Out of the cup but keen to impress the record crowd at the Dripping Pan, Lewes pulled back a second half conciliation when Emily Kraft rifled in one of the goals of the round.

At the Select Car Leasing Stadium, two goals in two minutes set the tone for Chelsea away to Reading as the FA Cup holders emerged 3-1 victors.

Meanwhile, relegation-threatened Brighton picked up a morale-boosting win as they saw off Championship side Birmingham City with their 2-0 half-time advantage holding until the final whistle.

The semifinal draw will take place on March 21.
