MN: Giroud’s concern about defence justified – Pioli faces tactical and mental task

Olivier Giroud of AC Milan

Olivier Giroud spoke after AC Milan’s defeat against Sassuolo yesterday and appeared to point the finger at the defensive department for their role in the recent struggles.

MilanNews recall how the Frenchman was the only player to face the cameras after the 5-2 defeat and he understood that something is not working within the team, placing a particular emphasis on how the cohesion has vanished.

“We’ve lost solidity, which was our strength,” he said. Now, Stefano Pioli must work on the tactical aspect of the team to try and resolve some of the deficiencies but also on the mental aspect given how many players are making uncharacteristic mistakes.

At the moment it seems that Milan are constantly battling against a tide as they have found themselves 2-0 down in their last four games, and Giroud himself noticed it: “When the opposing team attacks we are always in difficulty and they score immediately, then we have to chase the game.”

There’s also a problem at the defensive level according to the 36-year-old forward, who obviously doesn’t point the finger at his team-mates but did mention that the rearguard are being beaten far too easily.

“We concede too many goals, it’s difficult to win a game when conceding 3-4-5 goals,” he said. Giroud is always among the last to give up and he got his name on the scoresheet in the first half, but he is right to demand more from those behind him, because winning while conceding three, four or five is unrealistic.
