Barcelona: Rafa Marquez to coach Barcelona B next season

Former Barcelona defender Rafael Marquez will return to the club for next season to coach the B team, taking over from Sergi Barjuan.

The appointment hasn’t been officially announced yet but terms have been agreed and a deal is in place with the Mexican.

Marquez spent seven years at the Catalan club as a player, winning 12 trophies, including two Champions League titles.

Considered one of the best Mexican players of all time, he played 147 times for his country, scoring 17 goals.

The appointment means that Sergi Barjuan steps aside after taking over in 2021.

He is generally considered to have done a good job, as shown in the number of players making the step up to the first team in his tenure, something which also affected the B team’s results on the pitch.

With Barcelona struggling economically and with injuries, the B team was often raided last season to bolster numbers in the first team squad.

The B team was ultimately unable to reach the promotion places and will once again play in the third-tier next season, the Primera Division RFEF.
