FC Barcelona – La Liga: Mingueza’s blessed season for club and country

Oscar Mingueza is enjoying a dream season. He’s made the step up to Barcelona‘s first team and has settled in nicely, and he has debuted with the Spanish Under-21 side as well.

His debut for his country came on Saturday against Italy in the European Under-21 Championship, but he was sent off. The Royal Spanish Football Federation – RFEF – are going to appeal his dismissal, though, as they feel it was unfair.

Luis de la Fuente wants the defender in his starting XI on Tuesday for their game against the Czech Republic, as he has impressed with the squad, just as he has at Barcelona this season.

The defender was given his marching orders in the 87th minute. Nicolo Rovella went to ground, claiming to have been on the end of a headbutt from Mingueza and the red card was flashed in Mingueza‘s direction.

But he had played well until that point and De la Fuente wants him available for Tuesday.

“You can see in the replays that Oscar doesn’t touch the Italian player at all,” the coach said.

“He’s clearly provoked by him, but the referee believes that there was aggression on his part and has sent him off.”

Mingueza’s future

Mingueza‘s contract at the Camp Nou expires in the summer, but Barcelona will activate their option to add two more years onto his deal.

He has played 28 games this season and 23 of those have come in Ronald Koeman‘s starting XI.
