Real Madrid – La Liga: Benzema’s legendary status grows as he catches Santillana

With his brace against Celta Vigo at Balaidos, Karim Benzema now has 186 goals in LaLiga Santander and this means he has pulled level with Carlos Santillana in the all-time table of Real Madrid goalscorers in the Spanish league.

There are now only three players with more LaLiga Santander goals than Benzema. He trails Cristiano Ronaldo (312 goals), Raul Gonzalez (228) and Alfredo di Stefano (216).

This is his 12th season at the club and Benzema has played in 373 league matches over this time, with his debut coming back on August 28, 2009, against Deportivo La Coruna and his first goal coming on September 20, 2009, against Xerez.

Right now, Benzema is in a great run of form as he has scored in each of his past six matches. This campaign, he has 17 goals in LaLiga Santander and 23 across all competitions.

In the Champions League, he hit goal number 70 in the European competition with his opener against Atalanta on Tuesday. He is only the fifth player ever to reach that number. The other four are Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Raul and Robert Lewandowski.

Benzema will now enjoy a rest and can recharge since he hasn’t been called up for France’s fixtures in the March international break.
